THE CHICKENS

The Chickens

"The Chickens"

The first chickens to arrive at Greenacres are Matilda, Charlotte and Harriot. We are unhappy with the way chickens are kept commercially so hope these ladies will provide us with some lovely free range eggs in return for as comfortable a life as chickens can have.

These girls are Black Rock hens and are now laying an egg each almost every day. They are also now very friendly as used to being handled daily. The eggs taste delicious and they are actually fun to keep!

The Chickens

After the 3 black rock chickens (centre) settled in - we just had to have some more. So 3 Isa Brown's joined our little group - (they are the gingery coloured ones). They have to stay in their large pens while lessons are going on as they are so friendly they get under everyones feet - but when ever lessons are over though, they come over and join us on the yard clearing up any food the horses have spilled. And don't worry about Marley there in the background - he wouldn't dare chase them as a mere cat is no match for these brave girls!

The Chickens

Our latest additions to our chicken flock are 3 light Sussex hens. These girls have settled in well with the others. If you look at the crest on top of their head it is very small and pink in colour - this is because they are young and have not yet started to lay. You can tell when they begin to lay eggs as the crest turns dark red and becomes much larger. The hen with the biggest crest is always the boss!

Chickens love left overs like bread, cake, cooked vegetables, cooked rice and pasta - so if you have any leftover scraps you're welcome to bring them along to feed the chickens - they'll be happy to eat out of your hand if you're brave enough. Please do check with staff first though just to make sure they don't get anything that may be harmful to them.
